A second chance at education for women in Egypt
Many women in rural Egyptian communities have grown up without education and struggle against inequality. The Life School project, run by Embrace partners Think & Do provides literacy, arithmetic and vocational classes to help them overcome these barriers. For 38-year-old Farida, going to the Life School has made a big difference.
‘Before joining the school, I was not able to express myself or take important decisions. I didn’t know how to read and write to the extent that I made a mistake in paying some bills and my husband made fun of me.
‘I learned at school how to read and write and solve some math problems. I also learned sewing and how to cook healthy food. I am very happy with all the things I learned.
‘I’m proving to people that I can be educated at my age and have a role in my community. My dream is to now open a bakery microenterprise to help my husband with our life expenses. The school made a big difference in my life.’
Since April, over 300,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Egypt. Our partner Refuge Egypt has shared with us what they have been doing to help the new arrivals.
