OUR SYRIA PARTNERS

OUR WORK IN SYRIA

Embrace supports Christians in Syria as they run projects bringing healthcare, social support and humanitarian supplies to communities in desperate need.

The Syria crisis is one of the biggest and most complex globally - the scale, severity and complexity of humanitarian needs remains extensive. The civil war, which began in 2011, created more than 5½ million refugees and displaced a further 6 million Syrians inside their own country. The economic impact of the conflict and sanctions have been enormous. The earthquake of 6 February 2023 caused further devastation to communities already in crisis.

Children at a Child Friendly Space, Syria

MERATH

MERATH collaborates with the Fellowship of Middle East Churches (FMEEC) running child-friendly centres in Damascus, Homs and Mhardeh.  About 750 children attend the programmes which focus on supporting the psychological and educational needs of children in a safe environment. Play is also an integral part of the programmes which help children to experience normality and fun within a wider context of conflict and suffering. Embrace also supports MERATH/FMEEC to provide psychosocial and practical support to women and girls who have experienced gender-based violence and abuse.

PONTIFICAL MISSION FOR LEBANON

The Pontifical Mission for Lebanon works through the St Vincent De Paul Society in Aleppo to deliver medical care and assistance to vulnerable young and old.  The society has worked through teams of volunteers in Aleppo since 1898.  The programme includes assisting with medical expenses, hospital bills and supporting residents in an Aleppo home for the elderly.

“They have a safe space where they can forget their anxieties and just play like any other children.”
